  • Carriers are powerful offensive platforms, as they allow power projection from further distance than gun-armed warships.
  • But BBs operating alone were vulnerable to aircraft carriers and torpedo attacks from destroyers and submarines.
  • Battleships were the main type of capital ships as they were durable and had strong firepower.
  • If mono BB fleets kill everything, why build anything else? There are reasons that navies builds multiple types of ships: However, I consider mono-fleet only a stupid design choice, as it renders all other types of ships and compositions useless. Currently, you just go for an alpha-strike BB fleet as the main fleet composition, and sometimes corvette mono-fleet. In-game, mono-fleet is the only fleet composition people go for, so this idea of mine is not as useful.
  • A battlecruiser is a ship that often performs the scouting role for the main battlefleet.
  • A battleship is a ship that fights in the line of battle.
  • Anyhow, the point is that the computer tells you a decent amount about what the ship is supposed to be/do, and could be used to indicate the role.Ĭlick to expand.Indeed, one of the reasons navies classify their ships is to tell their capabilities and functionalities. 2.6 is introducing a new combat computer with the "Carrier" strategy - long engagement range but sit waaaaaaay back - but currently it's pretty useless on anything other than the juggernaut because nothing else is going to mount meaningful numbers of hangar slots, much less have weapons with at least range 180 as well.

This could also be tied into the combat strategy. Having the class tell you, automatically, would be helpful.

Right now, if you've got some some corvettes with missiles, some with PD, and some with neither, you either have to memorize non-descriptive name-to-role mappings, customize the design names to tell which is which, check the designs all the time, or put up with a fleet that you don't know what it has (yes, mono-fleets sort of resolve this, but there's a point where that stops making sense for example, a monofleet of PD boats is wasting a good bit of potential DPS, but a monofleet of anything else will take totally unnecessary damage from missiles). Something like this would also be beneficial for telling, at a glance, what your ships do.

  • If a Titan is designed with H-slots, it is renamed to "supercarrier".Įdit: adding more images to better illustrate this idea.
  • If a battleship is designed with only H-slot for hangars, it is classified as "fleet carrier".
  • If a battleship is designed without X-sized slots, it is called "battlecruiser".
  • If a cruiser design only has H-slots, it is classified as "light carrier" or "escort carrier".
  • If a cruiser design only has M- and S-sized slots, it is called "light cruiser".
  • If you design a cruiser with L-sized slots, it is called "heavy cruiser".
  • Second, the actual classification will be determined by the hull sections and the components you put into the design. First, the current hulls should be renamed from "corvette", "destroyer", "cruiser", and "battleship" to something along the line of "light", "medium", "heavy", etc to make it more vague.

Therefore, I propose a dynamic ship classification system like the ship designer in Hearts of Iron IV. Same goes with a light carrier - it is still named "Y-class Cruiser". But the resulting ship is not named "X-class Carrier", it keeps the name "X-class Battleship" in the ship designer, even though the design is not that of a battleship. If you want to design a carrier, the closest in-game equivalent is to take a battleship hull and apply the carrier/hangar sections into it. For the most part, this works fine, but there are cases when it runs into problems. In other science fiction franchises, there are also many types of ships as well (See this for some examples).īut in Stellaris, we only have access to four basic hull type: corvette, destroyer, cruiser, and battleship (not counting larger hulls like Titans or Colossi).

  • Carriers are divided into fleet carrier (CV), light carrier (CVL), carrier escort (CVE), etc.
  • Subtypes of destroyers include destroyer (DD), destroyer escort (DE), guided-missile destroyer (DDG), etc.
  • A cruiser can have subtypes such as light cruiser (CL), heavy cruiser (CA), battlecruiser (CC/CB), or the contemporary guided-missile cruiser (CG).
  • In real life, there are many different types of warship (see USN hull classification for more information). I'm reposting my comment on this thread here as a separate post after making some adjustments.
